Kazak: Carpets of the Caucasus by Raoul Tschebull. Near Eastern Art Research Center, 1971. 1st Ed paperback. Illustrated with 23 color plates and 17 b/w. With an introduction by Joseph V. McMullan. This is the seminal catalog on this type of Caucasian rug. 40 rugs are shown photoed in full color with captions. The collection of rugs were exhibited at the Finch College Museum of Art, New York, New York, November 5, 1971-January 8, 1972. “Caucasian rugs are primarily produced as village productions rather than city pieces. Made from materials particular to individual tribal provinces, the rugs of the Caucasus normally display bold geometric designs in primary colors. Styles typical to the Caucasus region are Daghestan, Shirvan, Gendje rugs, Kazakh and Quba rugs. Several carpet styles from contemporary northwestern Iran also fall largely into this bracket, such as the Ardabil rugs.

Set 22 antique 19th century fine leather bindings – Works of Washington Irving. Published by G. P. Putnam 115 Nassau Street, New York City during the Civil War era in the 1860’s. Wonderful brown leather spines with gilt titles on red leather. Marbled end papers. Books measure 7 7/8″ tall x 5 3/4″ x 1 3/8″ thick. The run of 22 volumes occupies 30 1/2″ of shelf space. Good condition with expected wear. A handsome set.

Percy Bolingbroke St. John (1821 – 1889) was an English journalist and writer. His published titles included A Young Naturalist’s Book of Birds and Our Holiday: a Week in Paris. This edition of The Snow Ship also includes the shorter title Merchant of Yakoutsk.
