Vintage Original Sun Clock or Armillary Sun Dial attributed to Sune Rooth, mid-20th century.
Antique garden ornament from Sweden, known as a Sun Clock or Armillary Sun dial, with a cast metal figure holding spherical rings, that can be mounted on a pedestal base (representing Atlas holding up the world). The metal of this sundial has an aged verdigris patina.
Dimensions 50 cm diameter, 80 cm height.

Swedish Armillary Sculpture

This figural armillary of Atlas, constructed of metal with a copper numeric banding, hails from Sweden. Original matte black finish and mounted on a well-proportioned custom wooden pedestal also painted in black lacquer. It is missing one strip of numbers on the inside ring but makes a beautiful over-sized sculpture for a variety of decor styles.

Mid 20th Century Antique Iron Wall Sundial

Mid 20th Century antique iron wall sundial with a nice weathered paint finish. This is an unusual sundial that mounts on a wall facing South to tell the time of day. Hanging in the center of the sundial is an iron arrow known as a Gnomon. The Gnomon when positioned correctly will cast a shadow on one of the numbers 1-12 to tell the time of day. It’s a great piece, looks amazing hanging on a exterior or interior wall.

Mid Century Scaphe Copper Garden Sundial

A striking mid-century scaphe form copper garden sundial, mounted on an angular Scottish granite base. This unusual sundial will make a stunning modern art piece at the centre of any garden with its clean lines and abstract form.

Beautifully oxidised and weathered, the sundial is engraved with the date ‘25th November 1953’. This distinctive bowl-shape is known as a scaphe, the design of which is thought to date back to 3rd century BC ancient Greece and is accredited to astronomer and mathematician, Aristarchus of Samos. It sees a hemispherical bowl with a vertical gnomon at the centre. Within the bowl are twelve inscribed gradations used to indicate the time of day.

While ancient depictions of the scaphe sundial were carved from stone, modern versions see the original design translated into metal, serving as both contemporary art and ornamental time-keeping pieces for gardens, patios and courtyards.
