Islamic heritage meets traditional German craftsmanship, precision and high-tech. Only 25 of these extraordinary knives are made.

Each knife in this strictly limited series is individually numbered and only manufactured on customer request. The hand-forged San Mai blade is hollow ground on both sides. The unique damask pattern was developed only for this series. It is created by the special structure of Damascus steel in conjunction with the “Pathway to Heaven” embossed motif, which was specially developed for these blades. Inspired by rose damask.

This knife series uses original wood that was used for the decoration of the domes of the Grand Mosque extension around the Ka’aba in Mecca, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (Shamiya project). All Teak wood used for these knives’ handles and the knives’ boxes are cut-offs or cut-outs of the original wood used in Mecca. The maple veneer used both, in Mecca and for these knives’ boxes even stems from the very same individual tree. Depending on the individual box’s design, even the amazonite stones used for these knives’ boxes are left-overs from the construction process in Mecca and from the very same batch as all other amazonite stones used.

Further authenticity is added by all boxes being hand-carved by Mr. Driss Chiboub, the very person who was responsible for virtually all decorative carving works at the Grand Mosque extension.

The knives’ blades are hand-crafted by high-end knife manufacturers Nesmuk in Solingen, Germany, using only the finest Nickel and Carbon steels. The intricate “Pathway to Heaven” Damascus pattern has been developed for this knife series only and requires an extraordinarily laborious process to be achieved. Each hollow ground blade features a core layer of high-carbon (1.5%) steel, wedged between outer supporting layers of special Damascus steel. The blades are then conserved for decades by applying an extremely thin (a few micro-meters only) invisible silicon coating (Nesmuk Protective Coating), which Nesmuk have developed together with world-renowned Fraunhofer Institute for Chemical Technology (ICT).

The Best Planned City in the World: Olmsted, Vaux, and the Buffalo Park System, by Francis R. Kowsky. University of Massachusetts Press, 2013. First edition hardcover with dust jacket. Beginning in 1868, Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux created a series of parks and parkways for Buffalo, New York, that drew national and international attention. The improvements carefully augmented the city’s original plan with urban design features inspired by the Second Empire Paris, including the first system of “parkways” to be used in an American city. Displaying the plan at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia, Olmsted declared Buffalo “the best planned city, as to streets, public places, and grounds, in the United States, if not in the world.” Olmsted and Vaux dissolved their historic partnership in 1872, but Olmsted continued his association with the Queen City of the Lakes, designing additional parks and laying out important sites within the growing city. When Niagara Falls was threatened by industrial development, he led a campaign to protect the site and in 1885 succeeded in persuading New York to create the Niagara Reservation, the present Niagara Falls State Park. Two years later, Olmsted and Vaux teamed up again, this time to create a plan for the area around the Falls, a project the two regarded as “the most difficult problem in landscape architecture to do justice to.” In this book the author illuminates this remarkable set of projects. Utilizing original plans, drawings, photographs, and many of the reports and letters, he brings a new perspective to this gigantic undertaking, analyzing it as a cohesive expression of the visionary landscape and planning principles that Olmsted and Vaux pioneered.

A French miniature sink from the late 19th century, with pastoral scenes and and removable basin. Created in the Moselle department located in current Northeastern France, this miniature sink features an oval removable basin with central handle surrounded by a three quarter gallery, adorned with heartwarming scenes depicting humble country people. This sink is resting on a wooden vanity with drawer and door on the right and an open shelf on the left. Raised on four arrow feet, the sink showcases a cursive Sarreguemines with U & C overlay mark on its underside revealing a circa 1875-1900 date (at which time the Moselle belonged to Germany). A perfect addition to a child’s room!
