This 2016 Orley Shabahang signature carpet consists of a wool and silk pile and organic vegetable dyes. Created in Iran, in a village surrounding the city of Arak, formerly known as Sultanabad, the carpet is completed using Orley Shabahang’s extremely fine Meyghan weaving technique. The wool is also of Orley Shabahang signature, derived from our own heard of Persian fat-tail sheep in Fars, Iran, and the silk from our silkworms near the Caspian. The wool is spun by hand using centuries-old techniques to preserve the high lanolin content and tensile strength of its fibers. The pile is hand-knotted, woven by an artisan weaver in her own home.

Orley Shabahang works house to house, village to village with our weavers, working to preserve the art of weaving as a cottage industry, and implementing ancient weaving methods to create the antiques of the future. This piece is from our limited series Animal Collection, and is truly one-of-a-kind. A minimalist approach to traditional Persian animal carpets, this carpet evokes the power of the lion in Persian folklore while lending itself beautifully to a modern setting. In the upper right-hand corner is the signature of Bahram Shabahang, our master weaver. The size is 3′ x 5′, and it is in excellent new condition.

This Orley Shabahang Transitional Qashqai Persian rug measures 4’ x 6’3” and showcases a tranquil abstract flower garden in neutral tones. Hand-knotted in pure wool using Orley Shabahang’s signature Shekarloo weave, this carpet features a luxurious and durable pile, ideal for high-traffic areas and everyday use. The interior consists of a rich brown field with natural horizontal striations that are the result of hand-spinning the wool. The Orley Shabahang signature is completed in green and camouflaged within the interior field. The exterior field consists of a rich green woolen pile and is also given added depth and texture with its linear striations. Two geometric motifs adorned with abstract floral details conclude either end of this statement piece in contrasting gold, black, light green, and cream tones.

A Tabriz rug/carpet is a type in the general category of Persian carpets from the city of Tabriz, the capital city of East Azarbaijan Province in north west of Iran totally populated by Azerbaijanis. It is one of the oldest rug weaving centers and makes a huge diversity of types of carpets. The range starts at Bazaar quality of 24 raj (Number of knots per 7 cm of the widths of the rug) and on up to the incredibly fine 110 raj. Raj are the units of knot density (it shows the fitness of the rug which based on the number of strings used for the foundation of the rug. Strings materials are usually made of cotton or silk which is used for very fine rugs).

The major producers in Tabriz today include: Alabaf of Tabriz, Galibafi Nassadji Tabriz, and Miri Brothers.

Tabriz has been a large and worldwide famous carpet making center in the Iran and the world. It played a significant role in development the rich traditions of the decorative and applied arts.

The art of Tabriz carpet was in its zenith in the 12th-16th centuries. About 200 Tabriz school masterpieces of the classical or “golden” period of the 14th century are characterized by a harmonic merge of the arts of miniature paintings and weaving, by a high level of craftsmanship demonstrated by artists and carpet weavers.
