A “kubbestol” is a traditional Scandinavian chair made from a single log. As they are collector items, to find a pair with original paint is a special find.
Notice the deep green and black painted seat and center band, worn in many areas to the natural wood below.
It was a talented craftsman who could make these special chairs out of a tree trunk. The kubbestol was quite common in some districts of Norway from about 1750 to 1960 and also found in homes in central Sweden (where this pair is from).
These chairs are heavy, solid/stable and ready to be used in spite of the typical age related cracks and distress seen in the photos.
This pair has been restored so they are strong, stable and given a wax finish. All dings, scratches, distress to crackling paint, etc are commensurate with age and do not detract from the folk-art appeal nor function of these chairs.

A 1960s Japanese Modern ‘Cascada’ chair made by Hida Sangyo. This chair is in its original condition featuring an ebonized solid beech frame, round tapered legs, a spindle backrest, and the original upholstered seat rest. The manufacturer’s sticker can be found on the underside of the frame.

Wegner’s iconic valet chair takes his abilities in design, scaling, proportion and craftsmanship to their limits. Expert carving and joinery highlight the idiosyncratic nature of the design, purposed as the ultimate gentleman’s chair. Charming and unusual Swedish Folk Art chair made by a skilled craftsman in the early 20th century. The chair is constructed from solid oak and oak laminate decorative arm rests. The back rest shows a distinctive owl shape with the traditional heart shape cut-out that makes for a handle to easily move the chair around. This type of chair is a traditional folk art chair in Scandinavia and is seen in different examples.

This chair with armrests is designed by Henry Rosengren Hansen and manufactured by Brande Møbelindustri in Denmark in the 1960s. There is a logo by the manfuacturer stamped under the seat. The design is refined in every detail. The backrest has a typical design. Also the connection with the armrests is remarkable. The frame is in solid rosewood, showing very beautiful drawings. The desk in the last picture is available: Midcentury Danish desk in rosewood by Svend Aage Madsen for Sigurd Hansen 1960s Desk and chair have been a set for many years. They make a perfect match, but we have decided to sell them separately. We have reupholstered the seat of the chair in a striking yellow fabric of very high quality by Kvadrat.
