The folded blue paper steel blades are set in wooden handles and arranged in a presentation box, both crafted out of thousands-of-years-old petrified bog oak. The blades are forged using sand smelting methods employed in traditional sword making, folding the steel four hundred times to increase strength and create the distinctive ‘Damascus’ pattern. Production is through a collaboration with London-based Blenheim Forge.
The steel we use in our knives is forged by Blenheim Forge, a local knife maker a few miles from our workshop. We value the importance of our community, seeking out and collaborating with like-minded craftsmen. Their Damascus steel blades are made using traditional techniques here in London, each skilfully folded to reveal an exquisite pattern. The steel used is Japanese blue paper steel (blue #2) with a cladding of 400 layers of folded Nickel and Iron. This collaboration ensures a truly one-of-a-kind, unique and made-in-Britain product.
Dovedale is a company founded on friendship and family. Ideas shared around the dinner table became ideas we now produce. Our knife project reflects this, and we hope the product we have created will be used with the same love in your homes. Preparing great food and sharing it with your loved ones is our most ancient of rituals, and our knives add an element of myth to enhance your ceremony.
The wood we have selected for this project is an indigenous bog oak from the north of Cambridgeshire. This wood is thousands of years old, with some pieces dating back to 3000-5000 B.C. Submerged in anaerobic conditions, the oak reacts with the minerals and acids in the soil to develop its stunning character and unique colouration. Our boxes are constructed using solid bog oak with traditional horn finger joints as the detail. They are then treated with light Danish oil, enhancing the natural hue of the wood.
