exquisite “capri” model coffee set made of bone china porcelain by the j & g meakin house, in staffordshire, england. Although this house was founded in the mid-19th century, it was in the following century when it achieved great recognition. In 1964 meakin launched a studio, a review and modernization of decorations as well as production. With this, the new shape of the coffee maker was designed: tall, slender and white, with a stylized handle, following the mi-century lines. With this base, came all the designs of the 60s and 70s proposed by jessie tate and eve midwinter.

this set therefore features the iconic 1973 ‘capri’ model designed by jessie tate. It is characterized by a large turquoise blue and green flower with geometric shapes that stands out greatly against the white background. The set consists, in addition to the teapot and cups, of a multitude of service pieces; all accompanied by plates of the same turquoise blue color and others in white, with a larger diameter, with the capri flower. Let’s not forget the power of the flower in these decades of flowerpower. At the bottom house stamp, j & g meakin studio.

about j & g meakin

the firm of j & g meakin was founded in 1851, in hanley, stoke-on-trent, staffordshire, when two brothers, james and george, took over their father’s business due to ill health. The couple was very forward-thinking and innovative, actively seeking export markets, especially in the united states. Their efforts went well and the business grew rapidly. Eventually, they formed eagle pottery, which was years ahead of its time and helped them become britain’s largest potting company.

in the 1950s j & g meakin produced more than a million pieces of pottery a week. The company remained in the meakin family until 1968, when it joined midwinter and two years later was absorbed by the wedgwood group.
