The women within my paintings are dressed from different periods, initially an aesthetic choice or as a direct result of transcription from source imagery, the decision has developed into a mechanism of exaggeration within my compositions; the melodramatic connotations of Recency/vintage garb leans into the scenes/states depicted. It also ties in a long-standing interest in theatre, particularly Commedia dell’arte, and a draw to the tropic female leads in early cinema. These thoughts galvanised while creating this work, I think they’ll continue to inform the paintings going forward also.
