Vintage Rug, 1920s

Beautiful, small and typical Afghan/Turkmen carpet, dark red color, silky shiny and dense wool, size 109 x 187 cm (without fringes). The condition is good for its age, some of the fringes are a little worn, in the middle of the 3rd main ornament (see photo from top right) the 3cm pile is slightly worn.

The Ersari tribe is native to southern Turkmenistan and northern Afghanistan and is one of the 12 Turkmen tribes. Ersari rugs are relatively easy to recognize due to their typical pattern shape. Turkmen rugs usually have a pattern built on several rows of main and secondary borders and a central field with a repeating motif of main gül and secondary gül. Gül refers to the pattern pieces that are arranged in a repeat in the inner field. Güls can be octagonal, rhombus or equilateral in shape – depending on the tribe and origin.
