A beautiful pair of Woodmark, Mary Webb Wood “Tree of Life” embroidered wingback chairs in eye-catching shades of terracotta, blue, green and brown on a linen background. The back of chairs is upholstered in chocolate brown velvet. They were designed by Mary Webb Wood in the 1970s for Woodmark Originals, and each is embroidered with © MWW at the base of the backrest, see 5th picture. Very comfortable and perfect for creating a sitting area in almost any room of your house. Comes with the four original matching fabric armrest covers, see 8th picture.
The colors on these chairs are very vibrant. There is missing embroidery and repairs on the bottom, side portion of the right arms, see last 2 photos. See more information in Condition Notes. Priced accordingly, due to condition issues.
From Mary Webb Wood’s booklet, A Woodmark Original Crewel: “These crewels are being hand worked in the Vale of Kashmir, high in the Himalayan Mountains, by experienced Indian artists and craftsmen. The background cloth is handmade there, and will not be as perfect as machine made fabrics… no two pieces will be precisely alike. There will be, inevitably, some variations in colors as the dye pots are refreshed, and some small changes in the interpretation of the parts. The background tones may vary, since the embroidered cloth must be carried out into the river for its final washing.”
Wear consistent with age and use. The chairs are strong and sturdy The upholstery does show wear; this set is not perfect. The seat covers have been cleaned and are therefore slightly brighter than the linen on the rest of the chairs. Water staining on the underside of one of the seat cushions. Small repairs were made to areas on the bottom side one of the armrests, see last photo. Wool crewel embroidery is intact but worn in places from use. More condition photos are available upon request.
